The First Concert

The first concert was a triumph. Of course. The Cathedral of St Peter in Chains was amazing - marble everywhere and countless Doric columns (or should that be Solomonic? I'll post a photo)...well, I counted 42 but didn't get a chance to see if there were any round the back. The architect, Walter, obviously thought a great deal of the Greeks and, again, there was that American blend of different styles (or epochs in this case).

The acoustic was tremendous and resonant and the organ scholars liked the organ; John Challenger was called back for a second bow following his Louis Verne Allegro risoluto, which was lovely.

The programme ran:

Byrd - Ave verum corpus
Lassus - Laetentur coeli
Sheppard - Libera nos
Bach - Prelude and fugue in C
Bach - Lobet Gott in seinen Reichen
Grieg - Ave maris stella
Harvey - I love the Lord
Vierne
Faure - Cantique de Jean Racine
Walton - The Twelve

The boys enjoyed the reception, where they did the school and college proud and chatted to the audience. We had supper in the undercroft (which resembled the chamber in The Chamber of Secrets and was made entirely of green reconstituted marble) and then we went home for showers (needed by a few) and packing (needed by most) and an early night (needed by all).
